This is a military compass, graduated in mils. It has a heavy brass case, and a mirror on the inside. This is a combination map compass and sighting compass. Used as a sighting compass, the mirror is positioned at an angle leaning toward the face, and the bearing is shot through a hole in the mirror near the hinge (see picture above). In this position the face of the compass is visible in the mirror. On the reverse side is a fold-out ruler. Not visible in the picture is a slender notch milled into the ruler which makes a spring, allowing the ruler to latch firmly in either the extended or collapsed position. There is a screw on the reverse next to the thumb loop which allows the capsule to be rotated and locked into place, presumably to adjust for declination.
