April 20th Letter
Below is the text of a letter to the editor which I e-mailed to The
Dispatch on April 20, 1999 in rebuttal to Rev.
Achilles' April 16 letter.
Pastor Bob Achilles doesn't like being lumped in with other denominations/religions
under the label "theists", claiming that these are "a mixture of believers
and unbelievers". He then goes on to claim that "Baptists ... as
a body, are overwhelmingly committed to the literal truths of Scripture,
which totally contradict the theory of evolution."
Rev. Achilles must be a different kind of Baptist than I was raised
as. In all of my life, I never had a pastor, or a sunday school teacher
tell me that scripture totally contradicted the theory of evolution.
And yes, the topic did come up. Rev. Achilles takes Mr. Morejon to
task for speaking for all Baptists, but then proceeds to repeat the error
himself.
As far as the label "theist" that is so objectionable, it simply means
someone who believes in a deity or deities. This includes every religion/denomination
that Mr. Morejon listed with the exception of Buddhists (as far as I know).
Rev. Achilles decries the "arrogance and ignorance displayed by supposedly
educated people who declare evolution to be a fact of science" and then
impugns the honesty of anyone who says that it is. Well, it is not
arrogance and ignorance to state the facts. I can provide upon request
citations from refereed scientific journals where evolution from one species
to another has been observed both in nature and in the laboratory.
Arrogant? Ignorant? Dishonest? Or just plain fact?
On the other hand, is it arrogant, ignorant or dishonest for the authors
of creationist literature (such as Morris and Gish) to continue to use
arguments that they know have been discredited?
