SUGGESTED  READING

You are here:  Evolution vs Creationism -> Suggested Reading

The following books are locally available (most are  in our local public library) or available through amazon.com.  I recommend these texts to anyone interested in the current debate.  These are presented in no particular order.   I have read or intend to read every book listed.   If you have a suggestion for a book to read, I would appreciate hearing about it.

  • Neutral Texts
  • The Creationists by Ronald L. Numbers (1992, Knopf):  A former "Scientific Creationist" documents the history of the "Creation Science" movement.  This book has received praises from both sides of the controversy.
  • The Bible (of course).  Whichever translation suits you.  Creationists tend to favor the King James version which is available online courtesy of the University of Virgina's electronic text center.  They also have a rather nice side-by-side frames version of the KVJ and RSV.
  • The Children's Story, by James Clavell (1985, Dell):  This is a jewel (small and valuable) about the necessity for teaching children the meanings of concepts, not just rote recitation.
  • General Science and Philosopy texts
  • Evolution and related science texts
  • Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science; National Academy of Sciences Staff
  • Science and Earth History, by Arthur Strahler: A good examiniation of the scientific issues.
  • The Age of the Earth, by G. Brent Dalrymple: I have been told that this is a very good work on radiometric dating.
  • Climbing Mount Improbable, by Richard Dawkins (1996, W. W. Norton): Richard Dawkins lays out his theories of gradualism.
  • Anti "Creation Science" texts.
  • The Myth Maker's Magic, by Delos B. McKown (1993, Promethus): An acerbic rebuttal of "Scientific Creationism" by the head of the Philosophy Department at Auburn University.
  • The Creationist Movement in Modern America, by Raymond A. Eve and Francis B. Harrold
  • Science and Creationism, by Ashley Montagu
  • Scientists Confront Creationism, by Laurie Godfrey
  • Evolution and the Myth of Creationism : A Basic Guide to the Facts in the Evolution Debate by Tim M. Berra (1990, Stanford Univ Pr)
  • Abusing Science : The Case Against Creationism; Philip Kitcher
  • Scientists Confront Creationism; Laurie R. Godfrey(Editor)
  • Science on Trial : The Case for Evolution; Douglas J. Futuyma (1995, Sinauer Assoc)
